TLDR: Ordered takeout, found a lash extension on the food, they forgot an item in our order and refused to refund us, waited extremely long for mediocre food.
Not sure if I went on an off day for them but in my opinion, this place is overhyped. We saw a lot of great reviews and was excited to give it a try. When we walked in, we noticed how busy it was, solidifying the idea that the food must be good. The phone was constantly ringing because there were many takeout orders as well so we were prepared to wait a while for our food. After placing the order, we asked for estimated pickup time and they said an hour. That wasn't a problem so we decided to go somewhere else while we waited. When we came back after an hour, we waited an additional 20 minutes in the car before deciding to call the restaurant for a status update on our order. She said about 10 more minutes. When it was finally our time to pick up our dinner, we excitedly went in to grab the two large bags of food and hurried home to enjoy. It wasn't until we devoured everything and glanced at the receipt when we noticed that they left out the most expensive item we ordered (and personally the item I was looking forward to the most) - the oxtail. It was quite upsetting to find out that we went right at opening 5PM, had to wait that long, and they still didn't get the order correct. When we called about this error, they refused to refund us.
That aside, the food that we did get was quite average. The fried chicken was dry and could be obtained from any other restaurant that also serves fried chicken. The soul fries were just fries, cheese, a few pieces of fried fish, some greens and mac. There was nothing that really stood out. The shrimp mac was okay but very small portion for the price. Also, we found a C curl lash extension on the jerk chicken. The best thing I had during the meal was probably the corn bread.
The meal can ultimately be summed up in one word - MID.Helpful 2Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 1 - Walter W.Staten Island, NY4534Apr 3, 2024Updated review
Called for a reservation, fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me, fool me three times. Im just dumb... called for a resey, staff said we are booked. Left my number. Nada, no booking in advance.
Hit up some folks and to my surprise. One of em had a reservation. Boom! Fate ! Leys try it for once!
Ambiance same as before, service took 5 minutes to address as we stood there lost again.
Sit down, time to eat. Menu? Presentation is great, price? Lil pricey but i get it. Support the small business right?
Ice tea $5 no prob. Got the food. Yo...why it so salty? Im swallowing the water. Msybe it was my chicken? Nah. Got my friend's oxtails and the chicken wings, its so salty it put me and a few friends there ( mind you party of 4) and my blood pressure prob off the charts.
Got a rule, gotta try things twice always. But id stay away. 3-4 tries? Give them my money for what?!?Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 3Feb 25, 2024Previous reviewI dont know if its a new culture, or if its lacking management, or if Shaw-nae too busy chatting. Or if these reviews are people who shill both here and google reviews but its the worst service I've ever gotten. Not even being addressed, or directed or spoken to but greeted with stares from staff and customers alike.
I went in with friends, looking for directions or to be addressed. Nothing but stares like I'm the one doing wrong when Im coming in to give YOU my money.
90% of these reviews dont even talk about the food or just talk about Shaw-nae's story. Or its too perfect and theres nothing that could be improved.
I want to try Shaw-nae's and I do really want to consider trying her food. I've went in twice and after not being addressed except for stares for 5 minutes. I leave.
Ambiance is nice, staff and Shaw-nae are not.
Maybe ill try again, but I've never been so dissappointed in numerous tries especially chooseing this place multiple times.
Shaw-nae's more like Shaw-nah so far sadly - 19182170Mar 30, 2024
This review is for a takeout experience. I really wanted to love this place but unfortunately it fell short for me. Our experience with the staff was great from calling to order for pickup to the actual pickup. They were kind and friendly. The restaurant was really cute and did have a living room feel. Now, the food. I was disappointed to hear they were out of a lot of items. I really wanted to try the Mac and cheese but they were out. I understand this happens, so we went with the collard greens and jerk fried rice. When we picked up our order they unfortunately were out of the jerk fried rice too and graciously offered us some sweet potatoes as they were out of all the other sides. It sucked that we couldn't try the sides we wanted (like no fries or anything??) but again, I understand it happens when a place is closing soon (in 2 to 1.5 hours?) and everything is made fresh I guess. I can't lie, I was still disappointed because I'm not really into sweet potatoes. So anyway, we drive back over the bridge out of Staten Island to go home to try our food.
Sugar Daddy Wings
- The wings were big and meaty and cooked very well. The sauce was good but literally tasted like just maple syrup, a flavor I got quickly tired of. Maybe just not for me but I can see why others would like it.
Vanilla Cornbread
- Tasted great but I didn't really catch the vanilla taste
Strawberry Cornbread
- A1!! Amazing
Collard Greens
- I did not enjoy these. They were realllly salty.
Oxtail and White Rice
- I honestly did not enjoy the sauce although the oxtail was cooked well. My husband thought they were okay.
Sweet Potatoes
- Actually pretty decent although as I said I'm not really into sweet potatoes.
Overall, I wish I could've tried some other items as I was not blown away by the items I did try as I expected from looking at the reviews. I would love to come back and try this again but I don't know if it would be worth paying the bridge toll again haha. But if you're in SI, I would try it out for yourself!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Mar 30, 2024
Had dinner with my parents and sister the other night. It felt like we were walking into someone's home. Everyone greeted us with a smile, including Shaw-nae. The food was great. The Mac n cheese and sweet potato sides were my favorite. Would definitely come back again.

Visited the restaurant early Feb 2024 on a Friday night. Made sure to call beforehand to check the wait. Luckily I was able to get a reservation same night. Had to wait about 15 minutes upon arrival, no big deal
The ambiance is dope, cozy. Pretty small. She has a couch, where you can sit, while you wait for a table, has dozens of books to thumb through by the couch.
The food is pretty dang good. However, kind of pricy. The service was on point.
Had the wings. You get about 10 for $20. We got half and half. Sugar daddy wings and (lemon pepper?) Not too sure about the second flavor. But they were tasty!
Also, shared an oxtail plate with my partner. Pretty good. Oxtail was tender. Moderately seasoned. I felt the rice was bland, though. Dish also came with two sides. I wanted greens, but they were out. So, I settled for cabbage as well as potato salad, both which of were prepared well.
Drinks were good as well. We got a pitcher of the rum punch. It definitely had me buzzing.
Overall, tasty food. Would return! Definitely lands a spot on my top 3 restaurants for Staten Island.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 219223492Jan 24, 2024

Ok, so I'm gonna be honest I could not get a reservation for weeks, so I did take out instead. Oh my god, I'm SO glad I did. It was amazingggggg! From the strawberry cornbread, to the rum punch, it did not disappoint. I can not wait to go back and try everything else!!! Wish I can give more than 5 stars!!!

I'm a firm believer in second chances and I'm writing this review with the hope of returning to Shaw-nae's House for a better experience in the future. I was excited to introduce my two friends and coworkers to a taste of my culture through some authentic soul food. Shaw-nae's came to mind because of its proximity and the positive buzz I'd heard about it.
Unfortunately, our visit on Friday night, February 16, at around 8:30 PM, didn't live up to expectations. Upon entering, we weren't greeted, leaving us a bit lost at the front. I took the initiative to ask a waitress if we could seat ourselves at an open table, to which she initially said yes, but then quickly changed her answer to no and walked away without further explanation. While looking for guidance from other staff members, we felt unwelcomed by their stares.
Feeling uncomfortable and unwelcome, I shared my concerns with my coworkers, and we decided it was best to leave. It was disappointing, especially because I wanted to share something special from my culture with them.
I'm hopeful that this was just an off night for Shaw-nae's House and not the norm. I look forward to giving it another try and hopefully having the warm and inviting experience I've heard so much about.Helpful 4Thanks 2Love this 2Oh no 6
